Privacy Policy for Pix Scan - PDF Maker

1. Introduction

Pix Scan - PDF Maker ("Pix Scan", "the app") is a free app built by Metal Devs Inc. ("we", "us"). It is available on Android and iOS. This policy explains what information the app uses, where it goes, and the choices you have.

The short version: your documents stay on your device. You don't need an account. Scanning and text recognition run on your device, and we don't upload your scans, PDFs or their text to our servers. We only receive anonymous usage statistics and crash reports.

2. Your Documents Stay on Your Device

The following is created and stored only in the app's private storage on your device:

  • Scans, imported photos and PDFs, and the PDFs you create or edit.
  • Your document history: file names, page counts, dates and small preview images.
  • Text recognised from your documents, including the invisible text layer added to searchable PDFs.
  • Read Aloud progress and bookmarks.
  • Your settings, such as theme, page size, voice and reading speed.

On Android, documents made with Text to PDF are also saved to your device's Downloads folder. Documents only leave the app when you choose to share or export them (see section 5).

3. Permissions and How They Are Used

  • Camera: to scan documents, ID cards, receipts and books. Camera images are used only to create your scan.
  • Photos and files: to import the images and PDFs you pick, or that you share to Pix Scan from another app. The app only reads the items you choose.
  • Notifications and background audio: so Read Aloud can keep reading when your screen is locked, and so you can control it from the lock screen, the notification or your headset.
  • Internet: used by Firebase for usage statistics and crash reports, and by your device's speech engine if you pick an online voice. The app never uploads your documents.

You can turn permissions off at any time in your device settings. Features that need a permission will stop working until you allow it again.

4. Features That Process Your Content

Scanning and text recognition (OCR)

Document scanning, searchable PDFs, smart file names, PDF to Text and Read Aloud use Google ML Kit, which runs on your device. Your images and their text are not sent to us or to Google for recognition. On Android, Google Play Services may download the scanning and recognition models to your device.

Read Aloud

Read Aloud uses the text-to-speech engine built into your device. Most voices run offline. Some Android voices are marked "network": if you pick one, your device's speech provider (for example, Google) sends the text being read to its servers to create the audio, under that provider's privacy policy. Choose a voice without "network" to keep reading fully offline.

While Read Aloud is playing, the document name and the sentence being read appear on your lock screen and in the notification. Anyone who can see your screen may see them.

5. Sharing, Feedback and Ratings

  • Sharing: when you share or export a document, your device's share menu sends it to the app or person you choose. That recipient's privacy policy then applies.
  • Feedback: sending feedback opens your own email app. We receive only what you send us, such as your email address and message, and use it only to reply to you.
  • Ratings: the rating prompt is provided by Google Play or the App Store. We don't see who you are or what you rate.

6. Information Collected Automatically

Usage statistics (Google Analytics for Firebase)

Firebase collects standard, anonymous usage data, such as app opens, session length, app version, device model, operating system, language and approximate country. It uses an app instance ID and, on Android, your device's advertising ID. We use this data only to understand how the app is used and to improve it. The app shows no ads and we don't use this data for advertising.

Crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics)

When the app crashes or hits an error, Crashlytics sends a report with technical details, such as the error and where it happened, device model, operating system, app version and an installation ID. Crash reports never include your documents. We use them only to find and fix bugs.

We do not collect your name, phone number, contacts, precise location or account details. The app has no sign-in and does not use cookies.

7. Third-Party Services

These services are used by the app. Their own privacy policies explain how they handle data:

We do not sell or rent your information to anyone.

8. Data Retention and Deletion

  • Documents and app data stay on your device until you delete them. Deleting a document in the app also deletes its Read Aloud progress and bookmarks.
  • Uninstalling the app removes everything stored in the app. Files you exported or shared, and Text to PDF copies in your Downloads folder, are not removed.
  • Usage statistics and crash reports are kept by Firebase for a limited time and then deleted automatically.
  • On Android, you can reset or delete your advertising ID in your device's Google or privacy settings.

You can ask us to access or delete data linked to your installation by emailing contact@metaldevs.com. Depending on where you live, you may have further rights under laws such as the GDPR or the CCPA.

9. Security

Your documents are kept in the app's private storage, which other apps can't read. Data sent to Firebase is encrypted in transit. No method of storage or transmission is 100% secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security. Protect your device with a screen lock to keep your documents safe.

10. Children's Privacy

Pix Scan is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy when the app changes. We will post the new version on this page and update the "Last updated" date above. Please check this page from time to time.
